Convicted murderer Michael Peterson’s North Carolina mansion featured in the Netflix series ‘The Staircase’ is back on the market for an eye-watering $1.9 million (£1.5 million). ***Update: this listing has now been reduced to $1.6 million***
The 9,400-square-foot estate at 1810 Cedar Street in Durham is listed on Zillow. The description even hints: “This home has been featured in Netflix documentary as well as a major feature film.”
What (allegedly) happened on The Staircase?
On the evening of December 9th, 2001, Michael Peterson called the police after he claimed to have discovered his wife, Kathleen, lying dead in a pool of blood at the bottom of the back staircase in the couple’s Durham mansion.
He said Kathleen had fallen down the stairs but a medical examiner later revealed she had been beaten on the head with a weapon. Mr Peterson was then arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife.
The investigation and trial were documented by film director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade. Mr Peterson throughout filming and at trial has always maintained his innocence but he was later convicted of beating Kathleen to death and sentenced to life without parole.
In February 2017, Mr Peterson decided to enter an Alford Plea – a charge of voluntary manslaughter. This allows the accused to maintain their innocence while acknowledging prosecutors have enough evidence for a conviction. He then effectively became a free man at the age of 73-years-old after serving 89 months behind bars.
His defense attorney David Rudolf (pictured above, left) said, “The bottom line here is that Mr. Peterson is not guilty. He never was guilty.”
Following the release of the hit Netflix docu-series, there have been many alternative theories of Kathleen’s death, such as an owl attack, offered by Mr Peterson’s supporters.
He told WRAL News that he still wears a wedding ring and he lives one day at a time, firm in the belief that he did nothing wrong. “I didn’t hurt Kathleen. I didn’t kill her. It just didn’t happen,” he said.
