“I was a kid in these streets, and I made it to the top.”
John Travolta stars as infamous crime boss John Gotti in the new biopic “Gotti” which reenacts his rise to the top of the Gambino crime family. The film, which is due out in theatres December 15th, also stars Travolta’s real-life wife, Kelly Preston, as Victoria the wife of the “Teflon Don.”
Gotti and his brothers grew up in poverty before he went on to become one of the Gambino crime family’s biggest earners and a protégé of Gambino family underboss, Aniello Dellacroce. Gotti organized the murder of the family’s boss Paul Castellano in 1985 and took over the family soon after.
Earlier this month, notorious former mob underboss turned informant Salvatore “Sammy the Bull” Gravano landed an early release from prison. Gravano had previously entered a witness protection program after he helped with the takedown of Gotti.
The ex-Gambino underboss dodged 19 murder charges and murder conspiracies which stretched for more than 15 years by becoming a rat for the FBI. The inside information he provided landed 39 Mafia wiseguys and associates, including Gotti, behind bars. At the time, he was the highest-ranking member of La Cosa Nostra to turn canary.
