Many dream of becoming an NFL player. These following star players achieved that very goal yet sadly had life stolen from them in tragic circumstances…
5. Fred Lane
Fred Brown Lane Jr. was an NFL running back for the Carolina Panthers until he was murdered by his wife in 2000. Lane was signed by the Panthers before the start of the NFL season 1997, he set a new record for the team with a 147 rushing yard performance. In the three years he spent with the team, he had achieved a total 2,001 rushing yards (a record for the time) and 13 touchdowns. Shortly before he was murdered, he had been traded to the Indianapolis Colts.
On July 6th, 2000, his wife, Deidra Lane, shot and killed him. He was aged just 25-years-old. His keys were found still in the lock of his front door when he had been shot twice with a 12-gauge shotgun – one shot was in the chest and the second fired into the back of his head, at point blank range. Prosecutors heard that his wife was abusive and wanted to claim the insurance money, although her defense argued she was badly abused and the shots were fired in self-defense.
During the 911 call she made, the operator heard her screaming: “He just got shot because he wouldn’t leave me alone. I kept telling him to stop.”
In 2003, she pleaded guilty to manslaughter and sentenced to eight years after her actions were found to be both premeditated and deliberate. She had also acted with malice, since the second shot was fired when he was helpless on the floor.
