9. Meyer Lansky
Born in Russia, Meyer Lansky was a Jewish-American gangster. Lansky, worked closely with infamous mobsters like Lucky Luciano and Bugsy Siegel and made his name after prohibition, through gambling. He was also a key player of the notorious Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The US government attempted to prosecute him for tax evasion in 1970 but Lansky invoked the ‘law of return’ in order to escape to Israel. However, he was deported because the law does not apply to Jews with criminal pasts, and went to trial upon his return. He was acquitted and so has not served any time. He died of lung cancer aged 80-years-old in Miami Beach. He is thought to have left over $300 million but this has never been proven.
