5. Amado Fuentes Paid Surgeons To Reconstruct His Face So He Could Not Be Identified
Known as “The Lord of the Skies” , Amado Fuentes was a Mexican drug lord who used a fleet of Boeing 747 planes to transport cocaine to America. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration described Fuentes as one of the most powerful drug traffickers of his era. During the 1990s, he was one of the wealthiest criminals in the world – transporting four times more cocaine than any other cartel boss – and his estimated net worth was at $25 billion.
U.S. and Mexican authorities wanted Fuentes captured and put on trial for his crimes. The search for him was so intense that Fuentes decided to take matters into his own hands. On July 3rd, 1997, he underwent plastic surgery and liposuction in order to change his entire appearance so he would no longer be recognised. He personally flew in top surgeons to Santa Monica Hospital in Mexico City for the procedure. However, the operation experienced complications and he died on the operating table.
The death was considered suspicions, especially when three years later the two surgeons who he had hired were both found dead, their bodies hidden inside steel drums, and showing signs of torture before they died.
