10 Things You Didn’t Know About The O.J. Simpson Trial

Twenty years ago, O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the brutal murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown-Simpson and Ron Goldman, a waiter. Now, the case – known at the time as the ‘Trial of the Century’ – is back in the public eye with drama-documentary American Crime Story starring Cuba Gooding Jnr, Sarah Paulson, Selma Blair, David Schwimmer and John Travolta.

Following the discovery of the bodies in Nicole’s home in Brentwood, California on 12th June 1994, O.J. was suspected of the double homicide. Following an investigation, and a car chase watched by millions of Americans, the former NFL star-turned-actor was subject to an eighteen month trial but was cleared of any wrong-doing. However, the new 10-part series lays bare a whole host of revelations and insights from people in the know.

During the trial, O.J. spent the night at the home of his lawyer Robert Kardashian. He recorded a suicide tape pleading, “Please remember me as a good guy. Don’t remember me as one of the negatives that might end up here. Please leave my kids at peace. I love everybody.”

Rob said in later interviews that he told Simpson, “This is my daughter’s bedroom. I can’t have my little girl in this bedroom and every time I come in here I’m gonna see your body.” The bedroom actually belonged to a then 14-year-old Kim Kardashian.

Nicole’s corpse was discovered outside her house with a huge neck wound that not only exposed her larynx but also cut into her spine. She had also received stab wounds to her neck, scalp and hands. Goldman obtained cuts to his hands while trying to fend off his attacker but he died after having his throat cut. Goldman also had cuts to his face, chest, and thighs. Both victims had been dead for several hours before the gruesome discovery.

Prior to marrying Nicole in 1985, O.J. was married to Marguerite Whitley between 1969 and 1979. They had three children together. Apparently, Simpson started an affair with Brown while he was still Marguerite’s husband. Speaking in the 2008 documentary, O.J.: In His Own Words, Simpson said: “I liked the way Nicole looked.” He also stated that “I was unfaithful to both of my wives, and it’s what I’ve regretted most in my life.”

Following their 1992 divorce due to ‘irreconcilable differences’, there were rumours that O.J. was jealous of Nicole’s relationships with other men. In particular, Nicole’s alleged relationship with Marcus Allen, a former NFL player, was said to have upset O.J.

Allen maintains he had nothing to do with Nicole but Faye Resnick – a star of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills – claims otherwise. In Faye’s book ‘Nicole Brown Simpson: The Private Diary of a Life Interrupted’, she claims that Nicole claimed Allen was extremely well-endowed by comparing his penis to a chunk of driftwood the women found on the beach one day.

Another reality TV star, Kris Jenner, who was married to the late Robert Kardashian – O.J.’s lawyer – said in an interview on The View that Nicole was worried that she would be killed by O.J. In addition, Jenner said in a Dateline interview: “She told me, ‘Things are really bad between O.J. and I. He’s going to kill me and he’s going to get away with it’.” Kris had also stated that O.J. cried apologies over his ex-wife’s coffin, saying, “I’m sorry, Nic. I’m sorry.”

Sydney Brook Simpson thinks that her mother died over twenty years ago because of a botched drug deal. Radar Online reported that a source stated: “They speculate that it was a drug deal gone bad… (Nicole’s) throat was cut like a Colombian necktie. Sydney doesn’t believe O.J. did it, but she doesn’t know what to believe.”

Former prosecutor Christopher Darden claimed that O.J.’s leading solicitor Johnny Cochran tore the lining of the gloves in a bid to strengthen his “If It Doesn’t Fit, You Must Acquit” slogan. “I think Johnnie tore the lining… so that O.J.’s fingers couldn’t go all the way up into the glove,” suggested Darden. Theorists have also discovered that Simpson was on steroids for arthritis, which made his hands swell up but this fact was not disclosed at trial.

During an exclusive interview with Barbara Walters in 1996, O.J.’s close friend and lawyer Robert Kardashian explained that he was unsure regarding Simpson’s innocence due to the existence of some blood evidence.

After the case, Kardashian was caught on camera leaving O.J.’s home carrying a Louis Vuitton bag. The contents of that bag have never been revealed however there are many who believe that it contained objects central to convicting Simpson. Ron Goldman’s sister Kim stated: “I absolutely think it’s possible that he hid or destroyed key evidence including the murder weapon.”

It’s said that 95 million people in the US tuned in to watch LAPD chase O.J. Simpson. Regular scheduled programming was interrupted on most major networks and Domino’s Pizza reported that delivery orders during the televised pursuit were as big as Super Bowl Sunday.

The white Ford Bronco that O.J.’s friend Al Cowlings drove while Simpson supposedly sat on the backseat, holding a gun to his head and threatening to commit suicide, became an emblem of the case. Following the civil trial, collector Michael Pulwer bought the car for $75,000 – almost double its original value. Now, it’s available to be rented out for parties.

Although Simpson was acquitted in criminal court, the Brown and Goldman families took civil action against O.J. In 1997, a judge awarded them $33.5 million in damages. Thus far, they’ve purportedly received around $330,000 which equates to less than one percent of the money they are owed.
